As the LED revolution builds momentum one industry in particular is being transformed by the possibilities that LEDs bring to its industry. The market for horticultural grow lights is undergoing a seismic shift in both technology, and more fundamentally, what is possible. Not only do LED horticultural lights bring the obvious benefits of massively reduced costs when compared to their energy hungry HID and HPS predecessors, they have a number of other less obvious benefits.
As the wavelength LEDs operate at can be carefully controlled LED grow light manufacturers can tailor their systems to only emit wavelengths that are beneficial to the plants growth, and more specifically for the particular stage of growth the plant is at. This level of control was impossible prior to the development of LEDs and means that energy bills can be reduced further still while yields reach levels previously unheard of.
LEDs, when well thermally managed, run cool compared to HID lights. This means that the light can be closer to the plant – making vertical farms in urban buildings with a small footprint economical. Cities, and in some cases countries, that have limited arable land and were previously reliant on importing fresh produce now have the option to grow much of their requirements locally. This is having a huge impact both the cost and availability of fresh produce – and in turn on the well being of their citizens.
